Red from flammable smoke, the sun reflects from the windows near the station in Las Vegas, N.M., on Saturday, May 7, 2022.
Confusing some regions on Saturday with the worst thick smoke of wildfires, residents of Las Vegas, New Mexico, were able to restore a sense of normality Saturday as their rural neighbors convened amid expectations of intense fire conditions.
In Las Vegas, the most densely populated area close to the fire, a number of evacuation orders have been lifted because containment efforts have narrowed down the threats to the city.
Thousands of residents had to flee from their homes.
The strong winds, which interspersed with dry air, low humidity, and above-average temperatures, produced “dangerous conditions” Sunday, the National Weather Service said.
