The unusual warm weather with record temperatures in the New Year will end early overnight with temperatures plummeting up to 10C across parts of Britain.
The forecast brings the hottest new year weekend on record, with 13.5C (61.4F) set in Bala, Gwynedd on December 31, 2021, a new year’s record for the UK and Wales, which is normally around 7C (87.6F).
The UK is set to see a major frost in the coming days, with the mercury set to fall to below-average levels for January in some places, with the Met Office warning that ‘anything could happen’ if snow drifts over Scotland.
There may be snow showers over these areas.
Meteorologist Dan Stroud, of the Met Office weather office, said: “After the exceptional warmth of the New Year with record breaking temperatures, there’s a marked change coming.
