Germany has missed its 2021 global climate target and should do so again, according to a statement.
Robert Habeck from the Greens told reporters in Berlin that Germany is well on course to achieve a halving of its emissions by 2030 compared with 1990 levels, a long way from its government’s 65 per cent target.
2021 has been a bad year for Germany’s climate goals.
Renewable electricity production reached a two-year low due to extraordinarily weak winds and carbon emissions rebounded following a short drop due to Covid-19 constraints.
Pandemic-related effects which made it possible for Germany to meet its intermediate target of a 40 percent reduction by 2020, fell short last year leading to a renewed increase in emissions for 2021.
