A massive wildfire now burning east of Santa Fe, New Mexico, is the biggest in the state’s history as thousands of firefighters continue fighting the flames.
The US Forest Service says the fires have scorched 299,565 hectares so far.
It overtook on Monday the Whitewater Baldy Fire for the biggest blaze in New Mexico’s history.
More than 4.600 firefighters and auxiliaries are operating, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
The Eremits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire, which is the largest active fire in the US, was only 26 per cent contained until Tuesday morning, with more than 2.090 firefighters deployed.
Other fires have also been burning in New Mexico and Colorado, with Colorado Springs laying out a fire ban.
