28.4mm (48.3F) was recorded in west London, while 30.3mm (2.3F) was recorded in Pershore in Worcestershire.
Temperatures of almost -11ºC (35º F) are expected across the North West Highlands this week, according to the Met Office.
Elsewhere in the UK, the highest temperature recorded yesterday was 30.7C (26.7F) in Gogerddan, in Dyfed, Wales, the Met Office said.
According to meteorologists, strong breezes and strong cold could persist until November as temperatures feel cooler across the nation.
The warmest day on record in Britain in September took place on 2 September 1906, when temperatures were recorded at 35.6ºC (35.7ºF) in Bawtry, South Yorkshire.
